Want a Baby on Board? Use These Conception Tips

As the decades come and go, so do the “norms.” It seems that generations ago, it was common to have large 4-6 plus kid families. Then you think about a generation ago, and they have one maybe two kids. As a 30 something-year-old, my generation and the generation below me seem to have a baker’s dozen in mind for their life goals. I know that conception is easy for some, moderate work for others and almost feels impossible to some. Yes, fertility may be an option, but let’s talk about other things you can try to make a bun in the oven first.

Know Your Body

So, who knows your body better than yourself? I know, I know it sounds dumb, but seriously, get in sync with your body. How is your menstrual cycle? Is it regular every month, or do you usually have irregular periods? That will play a massive role in being able to try and track ovulation. Fun fact, a man’s sperm can swim around for up to 5 days while a woman’s egg has only 12-24 hours. So keep that in mind when you are considering everything. Another thing is a man’s sperm will constantly regenerate throughout their lifetime while a female’s eggs are the age of the woman.

Check Your Ovulation

So, you got a tracking planner or an app on your phone for your period. You are on your 3rd month of tracking, and you have a “normal” 28 days cycle. The first thing you need to know is that you win a gold star! Just kidding. Every women’s body is different, and there is no normal cycle. The only cycle that is normal is learning your own menstrual cycle and what is typical for you.

Now, let’s say you are every 28 days. You will be ovulating (or getting your eggs ready to fertilize) about two weeks before the start of your next period. If you are more irregular and you carry feminine products around in your purse for a week, wondering when shark week will attack you will find your ovulation harder to figure out. I recommend getting ovulation prediction kits. You can get them at your local drug store or even online. To make it simple, you test positive, the best time to conceive will be the next three days. The way it tests positive is checking for a hormone that is only released during ovulation. For you guys that are interested, it’s called luteinizing hormone.

Improve Your Own Health

As almost everyone has heard their entire life, is you should try and be in good health, eat, right, sleep enough, weigh a certain amount, etc. I am going to say the same thing. I mean think about it, in a different perspective, if you have a messy house full of junk, clutter and random stuff you have to move around to get from point A to point B, do you think people are going to want to come over? Probably not. So if your body isn’t healthy, conception will be harder, if that makes sense. You want a clean, healthy body for your baby to live for the next 40 weeks.

Another huge thing is that if you are over (or under) weight, it messes with your estrogen levels which is vital in the baby-making aspect of everything.

So if you aren’t in the best shape of your lift, just try to take it slow, maybe walk an extra 5 minutes a day and grab an apple to start. Don’t stress over it too much as that doesn’t help, but make better choices and you will get your health in check in no time.

Start a Prenatal Vitamin

Along the same lines of a healthy body for both partners, you should start a prenatal vitamin as soon as you decide you want to try and conceive. You can get them almost anywhere. This will help you make a reserve of nutrients for your little bundle of joy throughout your pregnancy. I mean honestly, pregnancy is amazing, but can also be very draining for some women and their bodies. Why not try and add these extra nutrients from the get-go? Fact of the paragraph, did you know folic acid in the multivitamin can help prevent birth defects?

Limit Smoking and Drinking

If you are truly ready to try and conceive, I would strongly suggest to cut out all alcohol and tobacco. I mean, I know there are healthy babies who have parents who smoke or consumed alcohol, but why risk the possibility? Anywho, there are many chemicals found in cigarettes like let’s take nicotine, for instance. Nicotine speeds up the loss of a women’s egg, so you have an even smaller window for conception. Alcohol can have effects on baby as you are trying to conceive or as the egg gets fertilized. Just avoid it.

Don’t Stress About Positioning

If you have intercourse standing on a chair while eating a popsicle you will conceive a boy. I hope you know I’m kidding. Positions are a myth. You can try your own style, and it will not make a difference in conception.

However, gravity will make a difference. What I mean is yes, sperm can swim, but they need to make it to their initial destination first. If you are standing or sitting during intercourse, it makes the sperm easier to not make it. If that isn’t your thing, maybe try laying down afterwards for a short period of time. Your goal is to let his sperm make it to your egg as smoothly as possible.

Don’t Overdo It

It may seem like a good idea to have sex every single day around your ovulation to get pregnant. As in maybe, you take a lunch break to conceive and dinner break and so on, but it is not necessary. Remember, sperm can live up to 5 days so you may be fertilizing and not even know it. Planning is great, but don’t overthink or overdo it.

Track His Habits

It takes two to make a baby, right? So some helpful and useful tips for the male half. Whitey tightys are not a good idea. Why, because they can make you lose some sperm cells. Avoid foods that contain high soy as they can deplete your count as well. How about this …. any concentrated heat on his manhood, can affect fertility, so keep that hot laptop or heating pad away from the baby maker.

Final Thoughts:

You may be one of the lucky ones and be able to get pregnant with no issues and maybe even on your first try. Or you may not conceive for a year. There are also couples who have tried for numerous years and tried fertility drugs and still have difficulties. Just remember these are tips and if you keep these in mind, hopefully, they will help boost your chances at conceiving your bundle of joy.

I would like to end on a positive note. I know a couple who have been married for 6-8 years and have been trying to conceive a child for that entire time. They recently became pregnant. It can happen when you least expect it.

Another friend tried for years and finally got pregnant with fertility medication. They tried again for years and were unable to conceive. They adopted the most beautiful little newborn girl. Shortly after, they found out she was pregnant.

So miracles ALWAYS happen. A miracle is getting pregnant no matter how it happens or adopting your child. A miracle is a child who has a family.
